There are so many brands and types of tents to choose from but what is the best tent you will be most comfortable in. A tent for camping at the Outer Banks will need to perform under different conditions than if you would do a vacation in the mountains.
- Strong Winds
- Sand
- Heavy Rain
When looking for a good quality tent or other camping equipment I usually have very little luck at the big department stores. Most of the time I find what I'm looking for at an outdoor outfitters supply store or one of the large hunting and camping supply stores.
What things to look for in a good tent
- Ease of entry
- Ample room to move around inside
- Are there storage pockets for your belongings
- Is the tent made of ripstop material
- Are the seams sealed
- Will the tent withstand strong winds
- Is the tent free standing without stakes or ropes
- Does the rain fly cover the entire tent
- High quality water repellent fabric
- Are there ample tie downs for the tent size

The best tent that I have found to best meet the demands of camping at the Outer Banks is a good quality dome shaped tent.
Some dome tents only have 3 poles to form their shape. The tent we have used for a number of years has 6 fiberglass poles to form the shape of the tent. The extra poles have proven to be very strong and stable in strong winds. Other styles of tents may stand in windy conditions but you may experience a lot of flapping noise from the loose tent walls. I have found the flapping noise to prevent me from sleeping well.
Another great quality about a dome shaped tent is it's ability to shed water and not develope puddles that have the potential of leaking through.
My personal tent that has proven to be reliable in all types of weather is the Alaskan Guide model sold by Cabela's. I have been very pleased with this tent.
Even though the last couple of years we have done some of our beach vacations in a travel trailer, I plan to keep this tent for years to come.
I hope this helps you in choosing a tent for your Outer Banks Vacation.
