Flying Kites Fun For Everyone
If you are thinking that flying kites are for kids, you may be surprised how much kid you find in yourself when you visit the Outer Banks. With almost always having a constant breeze at the beach, it just seems natural to fly a kite. Flying kites, some call it kiting, can be as relaxing as just sending a kite up on a line and watching it hover in a gentle breeze or you can be involved with intense acrobatic manuevers while flying a stunt kite.

A Kite Flying Festival has become an annual event in June, being held on the sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge State Park. The festival is a time when you find a wild display of kites being flown. You will find the usual delta shaped kites to giant crab kites. It is a time to show off your latest kite and just have a lot of fun with other kite flying enthusiasts.

Best Kites For The Outer Banks There are so many kite designs to choose from, that I can't say there is a best kite. The best kite really depends on what you are looking for in performance from your kite. May be you are looking for a lot of action or just a kite that is easy to put up into the air. You may want a kite that is all about how cool or crazy it looks in the air. So the best kite will depend on what you are really wild about. Where To Get A Kite One of the best places to get a really great kite would be to go to one of the kite stores right there at the Outer Banks. You will find just about any style or design that you are looking for. I always enjoy going into these kite shops just to look at all the great kites on display even if I don't leave the store with one in my hand. You will find that kites sell for less than $50 to several hundred dollars. Before you leave the kite store, you may want to invest in a good spool to wind your kite string on. A good spool will go a long ways in making kite flying even more fun. If you are on a tight budget I have always found good kites at one of the big chain stores for less than $20.

If you would like a fun family project you may want to consider building your own kite. The internet has a lot of plans and ideas for kites. There are some great materials available for kite building. One material that works well for a kite is the light weight rip stop fabric that you may find being used in some tents. Although less durable, it's not hard to learn how to build kites from plastic bags. This is a very cheap option to making your first kite! I hope you and your family have as much fun flying kites as we have on our beach vacations to the Outer Banks. It's a fun way to pass time and the Outer Banks probably has some of the best kite flying wind you could ever want.
