Geocaching
At The Outer Banks

Geocaching is a fun activity that you may want to participate in while vacationing at the Outer Banks.

What is it?
In the simplest terms, it's looking for hidden treasures using a hand held GPS device. The hidden items have been placed in their locations by other people, just like you, that are taking part in this exciting game of hunting hidden treasures.

These caches have been hidden all around the world, even right here at the Outer Banks.

What will I find when one of the caches are found?
It can literally be anything. It's up to whatever the one hiding the cache wants to hide. You may only find a log book that you can sign proving that you were able to find the hidden treasure or you may even find something of value.

Can I keep an item that I find?
Yep, as long as you leave behind something of equal or greater value.

Okay, how do I get started?
Well, the first thing you need to do is get a hand held GPS device, if you don't already have one.

Where can I find a location of a geocache?
You will need to go to a site like geocaching.com where you will find the location of hundreds of hidden caches all around the world.

Choose the area where you want to search, then retrieve the longitude and latitude coordinates and load them into your GPS device. Now you are ready to go treasure hunting.

Are there geocaches hidden at the Outer Banks?
Yep, there are actually dozens of caches to look for. There may be more treasures to look for than you probably have time for.

Once you get started, you may want to hide your own cache to be found. After you have found a few caches yourself, you will soon see the creative ways that other people have hidden things. It's really a lot of fun to come up with a clever way to hide an item that will be a real challenge to find.

I hope geocaching at the Outer Banks becomes a favorite activity on your next beach vacation.
