Getting There By Car

Driving is the most popular way to travel to the Outer Banks. Even if you choose to fly, you will probably rent a car and need driving directions for the remaining portion of your trip.

There are two main routes that are used for getting to the Outer Banks.

If you are traveling from the south or west, you will want to take State Route 64 east to Manteo on Roanoke Island.

If you are coming from the west, you will be able to get on State Route 64 at Raleigh, North Carolina.

If you are driving from the south you will probably be traveling on Interstate 95 north and you will be able to get on State Route 64 east when you get close to Rocky Mt., North Carolina.

For driving here from the north you will want to drive to Richmond, Virginia and take Interstate 64 towards Hampton, Virginia and then take Interstate 664. You will eventually see signs for Nags Head and you will take State Route 168 south. This will take you to State Route 158 which will take you right into the Outer Banks.

TIP: Another another alternate route from taking Interstate 64 would be to continue on towards Petersburg, VA and take Route 460 to Interstate 664. Route 460 is an undivided 4 lane highway with a couple towns, but there is a lot less traffic.

When you travel here from the north you will arrive between Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk.

Driving Tips

  • Arriving early afternoon usually helps to avoid the heavier traffic.
  • Leaving early morning for your trip home can help beat the heavier traffic leaving the area.
