The Ocracoke Ferry
Things To Know

On your way to Ocracoke Island, you will have to board the Ocracoke Ferry to reach your destination since there are no bridges to the island.

The ferry ride is an enjoyable, free 40 minute trip that will give you a chance to see the islands from a different view and give you a chance to take some pictures of the island scenery.

Ocracoke Ferry Coming To The Dock

When you arrive at the end of the road on Hatteras Island, you will see signs for the ferry that direct you to the loading area.

An attendant will direct you to drive your vehicle into a lane where you will have to wait till a ferry arrives. Then you will be directed to drive your vehicle onto the ferry.

The time you have to wait for the ferry can be a few minutes to several hours. This will depend on the time of day and the month you are there.

The best time to arrive for boarding is early morning. If you arrive later in the day, you may have to wait in line longer to board the ferry to Ocracoke.

While you wait for the ferry, there are public restrooms available and a tourist information center. At the information center, I was able to get some flyers and brochures on some of the local restaurants and attractions.

Important Note
This ferry doesn't take any reservations. You are loaded first come first serve.
