Pier Fishing
On The Outer Banks

Pier fishing at the Outer Banks has been some of the most fun that I have enjoyed while vacationing. Without having a boat, it offers an easy way to fish in deeper water and catch larger fish.

A Personal Story on Fishing Piers

A few years ago we were staying in Duck around the third week of September. I went down to Kitty Hawk for a few hours of fishing on the pier. It was one of those great evenings when the Spot were biting for a couple hours non-stop. We were catching 10 and 12 inch Spots, two at a time.

It doesn't get much better than going home with a cooler full of fish.

Some Outer Banks Fishing Suggestions

  • I like to use an 8' to 9' surf rod with an open face reel.

  • My favorite bait is Blood Worms, Cut Bait, Shrimp and Squid.
  • I take a small cooler and ice to keep my bait and the fish I catch fresh.
  • I usually use a double rig with a two or three ounce weight.
  • A Flounder rig works well for catching a number of different bottom feeding fish.

  • If fishing for large fish, it's helpful to have a drop net for hauling up your big catch onto the pier.
  • The best fishing lures for catching Spanish Mackerel and Blue Fish are one of the bright green or silver GOT-CHA Lures.

Things I Like About Fishing Piers

  • Most fishing piers have the convenience of a store at the entrance for buying supplies.
  • I find it fun visiting with other people fishing.
  • Being able to get a few fishing tips or sharing some of my own with someone.

  • The piers have lights on at night, making it nice for some late night fishing.
  • Benches are available to sit on.
  • A fish cleaning station is available on most piers.
  • You aren't required to have a fishing license since most piers have a license that covers their customers.

The Outer Banks offers eight fishing piers between Kitty Hawk and Cape Hatteras.

With fees averaging $10 for a 24 hour pass and most piers offering equipment rentals, it is very easy to try saltwater fishing for the first time without investing in your own equipment.

I think all the piers on the Outer Banks are a great opportunity for some fun, but I guess the Hatteras Island fishing pier is a favorite with most anglers.

I'm sure you will find pier fishing to be a lot of fun.

I hope to see you on a pier at the Outer Banks hauling in a big one!
