Stay Dry While
Camping In The Rain

It is possible for your stuff to stay dry when camping at the Outer Banks during a thunderstorm or an all day rain. A thunderstorm can come in quickly and sometimes put down a lot of rain in a very short time possibly causing minor flooding. This water will drain fast but if you have not planned for it you could end up with your belongings getting wet.

Tips to keep the things in your tent dry.
  • Choose a high spot on the campsite to set up your tent
  • Avoid setting your tent in a low area where water can collect
  • I have found a good quality tent will keep me dry in most rain storms
  • Choose a tent with a full rain fly, completely covering the tent
  • Keep your sleeping bag and other items from touching the outer edge of the tent
  • Use a plastic ground drop under the tent to prevent items from drawing damp from the ground moisture
  • Keep the ground drop completely covered by the tent floor, leaving none of it visible

If you don't have a good quality tent with a full rain fly, to keep dry, you may want to put a rain tarp over your tent.

I almost always erect a rain tarp over the picnic table area for shade from the afternoon sun but if it would rain, we have an area that's dry for eating and cooking our meals.

Always remember to "Keep It Fun"
