Surf Fishing At The Outer Banks
Of all the places to go surf fishing along the East coast, Outer Banks fishing is by far the most popular among anglers.

It was an October fishing trip to the north side of Oregon inlet, at the age of 16, when I was introduced to fishing in the surf. I had such a great time that I have been hooked ever since. That trip taught me some of the basics that made it possible for me to catch a number of Blue Fish and the best Flounder I have ever tasted. Getting Started Outer Banks Surf Fishing My favorite fishing outfit is a 9 foot pole with an open face reel and rod holder. I like to use 15 lb. Stren fishing line when using a bottom rig with a pyramid sinker. When casting weighted lures, I like to use lighter 8 lb. test line for casting distance. (depending on lure weight you may need to add a 10 foot leader with 15 lb. test line) I always have a 2 hook bottom rig and an assortment of 2-5 oz. pyramid sinkers. I like to use hooks with a wire leader unless I'm fishing for Spot.

My Favorite Bait and Best Fishing Lures I never seem to go wrong with cut bait, like a piece of fresh mullet or finger mullet, for catching a wide variety of fish. I almost always have some squid with me cut into strips about 1/2" x 3" long. This has worked well for catching Speckled Trout and Flounder. Shrimp and live minnows also work great for catching Flounder. For catching Blue Fish and Spanish Mackerel, when they are running, I like to throw steel "as I call it", a chrome torpedo shaped lure about 3 inches long weighing approx. 1 oz. with a treble hook on the tail end.

My Favorite Time for Outer Banks Surf Fishing May through November are the most popular months for fishing in the surf, but I prefer the months of September through November the most. I like the cooler days and the warm water during the fall months. My personal experience fishing during the fall has been more successful catching larger fish. If I don't have a lot of time to fish I pick up a tide chart and try to fish during high tide.
My Favorite Beach to Catch Fish I have to agree that Cape Hatteras fishing is probably the most popular surf fishing on the Outer Banks. As with many other anglers I prefer the beach at Buxton, within a half mile of either side of the point, known as the "Cape Point". Cape Point on Hatteras Island has become legendary with surf anglers for producing record Cobia and Drum.

I invite you to do some Outer Banks fishing while you are exploring the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, an experience that has brought me back to Hatteras Island many times.
